Hi Jason
After spending a couple of terms at university and beeing taught the essentials of motivation, needs, instincts and behavior I'd rather focus on Herzberg's Two factor theory to explain the purpose. Although Maslow's theory is well-known his work is weak in quantitative and, in particular, qualitative terms. By contrast Herzberg and others (Porter/Lawler, quality of working life, a more procedural viewpoint to motivation) consist of in-depth empirical analysis and can be verified in a clear and repeatable experimental setup.
